The Saxon Hotel is a five star luxury retreat of pure pleasure. It is situated in Sandhurst- a suburb known for its calm and tranquil atmosphere- and spread over 10 acres against a scenic countryside backdrop. This is a perfect location for both travelers and businessmen alike. A fun fact about the hotel: it was used by none other than Nelson Mandela himself and it was here that he finished his autobiography- Long Walk To Freedom.

About the hotel

There are a total of 53 suites over three floors having six variants ranging from the Villa luxury suite to the Presidential suite. All rooms offer king sized beds, private balconies, satellite TV, free wifi, iPod docks, lounge and a separate dining area, mini business deck, mini bar, butler facilities, complimentary wine etc.

The bathrooms have a separate walk-in shower and bath, spa hydro facilities etc. Some of the suites also have a guest bathroom, Jacuzzi and steam room and are amply stocked with amenities like bathrobes, hair-dryers, deep soaking bathtubs and various other body products.

The décor showcases African art and is an integral part of every room- all filled with art ranging from sculptures and paintings to pencil sketches etc.


The meals include a complimentary English breakfast. There are three restaurants in the hotel – The Terrace, Luke Dale Roberts Saxon and The Qunu Grill. The Qunu Grill has a lovely ambience. It is situated in the midst of lush green surroundings and decorated in varying shades of red and furnished African style with hand woven lamp shades etc and specializes in international delicacies. The Terrace is a good option for dining out in the open under the stars.

In terms of facilities, the hotel features six outdoor pools, a sun terrace, gardens, library, golf course, tennis court a wellness center, gym, spa services, steam room, 3 restaurants, 4 bars/lounges, free parking without reservation etc. It runs a shuttle service for a fee and there is also a special Airport shuttle. The staff has been praised for its attention to detail and almost ‘telepathic’ services. The hotel also has facilities for hosting business meetings and banquets.

Transportation and Sightseeing

The luxury hotel is very close to Sandton which is a great place for sightseeing, shopping, food etc. It is very close to the Sandton City Centre and the Rosebank Mall- perfect for shopping. For sightseeing, the Hude Park and Nelson Mandela Square are good options. 45 minutes from the hotel are the Sterkfontein Caves- a World Heritage Site where more than 500 fossils have been found since the early 1900s.

You could also try your luck at the Gold Reef City and Casino. For the art fans, there is the Circa Gallery which showcases contemporary art. For the foodies, the Pigalle at Nelson Mandela Square is a mouthwatering experience.  In terms of connectivity, the Lanseria International airport is about 30 kms while the Johannesburg International Airport is about 40 kms from the hotel. there is high speed train that runs from the Tambo International airport to Sandton Station and can be booked from the hotel in advance.
