When staying at hotels, you probably don’t think about the person owning it, but might be surprised if you find out that the owner is a celebrity or a rather interesting person. It probably will not influence your decision about staying at a hotel – you’re right if you’re picking a hotel to suit your needs and wishes the best. Nevertheless, knowing about eccentric hotel owners is certainly an interesting thing.

Sultan of Brunei

Hassanal Bolkiah is one of the richest men in the world. He’s the ruler of a poor country of Brunei and with his net worth of 20 billion US dollars; the Sultan has more money than most of the country’s population together. You could call the Sultan of Brunei a man of class (better not) for spending $21k on haircut, but you could certainly call him eccentric. The Sultan doesn’t pay taxes in his home country. Instead, he pays taxes in the USA, where he owns a luxury 5-star hotel.

The Sultan of Brunei is the owner of a luxury Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, California. This boutique hotel of 103 rooms is operated by the Dorchester Collection, which is a sort of guarantee of luxury. The luxury rooms are equipped with the cutting-edge technology gadgets and most of them have Jacuzzi, which is why it is no surprise Hollywood celebrities are often guests here. Staying at Sultan of Bruinei’s hotel costs no less than $500.

The controversial Republican candidate in the 2016 elections, Donald Trump has been accused or racism, bigotry and corruption, but no one can say anything bad about his hotels. The Trump Organization owns several top-class luxury hotels across the USA, all of which have been praised for luxury and exquisite service. Still, probably the most famous hotel owned by Donald Trump is Trump Hotel Las Vegas.

Located near the Las Vegas Boulevard, the Trump Hotel Las Vegas is a luxury 64-stories high hotel, with stunning design. With gilded windows, the hotel tower looks like it was made entirely of gold, which would suit the surroundings perfectly. As of 2016, Trump Hotel Las Vegas is the third highest building in Las Vegas. Staying at the luxury hotel is a privilege for only a few. Depending on the type of the room, rates range from $150 to over thousand dollars.

Robert De Niro

Often referred to as the greatest live actor, Robert De Niro is an artist who likes venturing in many different projects. During his several decades long career, De Niro has been an actor, singer, boxer, writer and for the last couple of years, a hotel owner. The Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca, New York City, a 5-star luxury hotel is owned by De Niro, who sometimes acts like its celebrity chef.

The Greenwich Hotel is an 88-room boutique hotel, providing excellent service. Situated in a popular NYC area and being in an elegant building, this luxury boutique hotel has been the number one choice even for those who have no idea who the hotel owner was. Still, staying at the Greenwich boutique hotel is not cheap. A room costs about $650 per night.

Although the real owner of the Hilton is William Barron Hilton, Paris Hilton, one of his 15 grandchildren is the most famous Hilton heir. Paris Hilton is a socialite, who had her shot in any ventures. She tried as an actress, DJ, fashion designer, etc., but is still the most known as the great-granddaughter of the founder of the Hilton Hotels, Conrad Hilton. And, of course, her porn movie.

Hilton Hotels & Resorts is a hotel chain of over 500 hotels in almost 80 countries on 6 continents. The first Hilton hotel opened almost a century ago and since, this hotel chain has been synonymous with prestige. The service and luxury of the rooms in Hilton Hotels are universally great, so the thing that sets the room rates is the hotel location. Probably the cheapest Hilton hotel in the US is Hilton Garden Inn Reno. This 3-star hotel offers rooms for as low as $100.

Donald Sinclair

Fawlty Basil - hunt4hotel

This hotel manager was the inspiration for the iconic character Basil Fawlty of the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Portrayed by a prominent member of the Monty Python crew, John Cleese, Basil Fawlty has become a synonym for short-tempered hotel manager. He’s desperately trying to make his boutique hotel in Torquay a posh place, but the hotel guests are not being quite a class.

Donald Sinclair’s hotel, Gleneagles Hotel or the real Fawlty Towers hotel is unfortunately out of business and the building is scheduled to be demolished this year. Still, there are 189 Torquay hotels on Booking.com, so who knows, there might be another hotel manager as rude as Basil Fawlty
